2026 Declared the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.
While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are legitimate Frog Games.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To understand this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is partially evident elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks especially powerful.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year so far.
If these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a true amphibian entertainment revival.
