Blues Boss Maresca Rejects Man City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has branded recent talk connecting him with a return to Manchester City as "100% speculation".
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's right-hand man in Manchester, addressed the persistent speculation surrounding his future.
Maresca, named Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, is under contract running until 2029, with a possible extra year option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my attention, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the Premier League, are set to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Strain Following Recent Comments
Maresca's latest statement come in the wake of he described a recent 48-hour period as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those initial words had fueled widespread speculation of a potential rift between the manager and the club's ownership hierarchy.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the Chelsea's leadership, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we talk about various topics. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The Italian however affirmed he would "absolutely" remain at the club for the coming campaign and called on the fans to keep backing the team".
In brighter news, Maresca indicated that injured forwards Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a fixture against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Perspective: Unresolved Tension
The apparent disconnect between Maresca and the Chelsea board persists as an open wound that still create unease.
While there has been no deepening of the matter in the open, there has equally been no apology offered, creating the matter unaddressed.
The mood during the manager's press conferences has grown increasingly awkward, leading to fears it could undermine what has up to now been a promising start to the season.
Chelsea's on-field position is strong: they are in the top four in the Premier League, have reached the League Cup last four, and can secure a favourable European position with strong performances in their remaining games.
The prevailing uncertainty is whether this off-field situation might begin to affect a squad that was beginning to appear cohesive.
