Christantus Uche Fuels Comfortable Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Without key figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that all but secures them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal direct entry to the last 16, especially following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were no match against a mostly rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
