European Union Maritime Forces Rescue Crew After Somalia Piracy Incident on Vessel

The Maltese-flagged tanker was seized by pirates on Thursday

EU maritime units have successfully rescued 24 sailors from a Malta-registered petroleum vessel that was targeted by pirates off the coast of Somali waters.

The vessel, which was carrying fuel from Indian ports to South Africa, was seized on the recent incident when armed pirates began shooting with machine guns and explosive projectiles before taking control of the ship.

All sailors secured themselves inside a secure safe room while the attackers took control of the ship.

Mission Accomplished

A naval vessel, functioning under the EU's anti-piracy mission, reached the tanker on the following day. Elite military units boarded the vessel and found all two dozen sailors unharmed.

"The crew is safe and no injuries have been reported. During the incident, they remained in the secure area in constant communication with command center," authorities announced, adding that a "demonstration of power" had convinced the attackers to abandon the ship before the warship reached the location.

Ongoing Threat

Officials emphasized that the threat risk in the area "remains critical" as the armed groups are still in the vicinity.

The mission involved a aircraft, drone and reconnaissance plane. Shortly before, another ship in the same area was approached by a fast boat but managed to evade it.

Return of Maritime Crime

This event marks the latest in a spate of incidents that have raised alarms about a resurgence of maritime crime in the region.

Piracy operations had decreased when global maritime security and security measures were introduced after reaching their highest point more than a ten years past.

However, assaults by Yemen's Houthi rebels on vessels in the Arabian Sea, which have been conducted for the recent period, have led ships to be rerouted through the African coastline - creating new possibilities for Somali gangs.

Statistical Overview

  • Seven reported incidents of piracy took place off the shoreline of the Somali region last year
  • Several vessel takeovers were recorded among these events
  • Only one incident of maritime crime was reported in 2023

Maritime security experts continue to monitor the situation as vessel operators navigate these potentially hazardous waters.
