Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to US legislators and impeding a legislative process.

The former director's legal representative submitted the response on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would seek to have the case thrown out for multiple causes including that his the accused, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was charged just days after Trump urged his attorney general to proceed against him.

Court Developments

In court on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the judge they aimed to present several motions to dismiss the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the government's case was vindictive and that a federal prosecutor was improperly appointed to assume control of the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was first handled by the original attorney, who left his position under influence from the former president after his examination into a different opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Courtroom Atmosphere

James Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, his wife and offspring Maureen, a US lawyer who the Trump administration recently fired.

Upon hearing to the court read his legal protections and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he comprehended the charges.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the judge.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the FBI Director from four years and was dismissed about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was leading an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.

While in office, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just immediately preceding the national vote that he was examining political contender the candidate's use of a private email server. Indictments against Clinton were not pursued, leading to disapproval from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors allege James Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the upper house by saying he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to leak to media organizations information about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and delay" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Through a recording Mr Comey published to his online platform after he was charged, he declared he was not guilty and accused the former president of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"We have been aware for a long time that there are ramifications to standing up to Donald Trump," he stated. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey came after Trump posted on social media insisting on his chief prosecutor, Ms Bondi, prosecute the former director and others.
