Hazbin Hotel's Showrunner Reveals Rosie and Alastor's Origin Tale Is a Major Season 3 Tease

Devoted fans of the show at last got a long-awaited backstory in the second season's episode 4, called “It's a Deal.” This installment will probably spark extensive conversation and pose many inquiries about the essence of one particular demon Overlord who seems far more powerful than anyone before understood. The new revelations include a glimpse into the human life of a beloved character prior to his death and condemnation to the underworld.

A Major Tease for Future Seasons

The series creator disclosed an inside detail about the episode – it serves as a major tease for the third season. Additionally, she offered more insight into the methodology of creating the mortal forms of her infernal animated characters.

In the episode, a flashback discloses that fan-favorite personality Alastor, the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his human life. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the afterlife beforehand to secure a powerful role in Hell. Rosie, who leads Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the strongest Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his soul.

This prompts an important query: In what way is Rosie sufficiently strong to raise Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?

“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a larger narrative that involves a great deal, leading into the third season,” the showrunner states. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she that powerful? The solution might be various factors, but the revelation is in season 3. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”

It is uncertain how long the audience will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The production companies have approved seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner often remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she says holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of keeping the second season's attention in the right places.

“The difficulty of any agreement with demons, or stories that have mysteries, is giving people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”

Questions Answered in The Next Season

The creator promises that the upcoming season will tackle the queries fans have been asking, such as why Rosie ordered Alastor to vanish for a seven-year period, which weakened his power in Hell.

“The whole seven years, and the pacts these humans are doing, and all that — it contributes to a larger story,” she reveals.

Meanwhile, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode offers another glimpse into what the main characters of Sinner Demons looked like as mortals, the second after seeing Sir Pentious’ historical mortal appearance in episode 2. She explains that significant consideration went into these character designs.

“The mortal forms of the characters hold so much weight,” she says. “They range from appearing quite distinct from their demon form to seeming very similar. With Pentious, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with a design that represents the character, as opposed to selecting an option that's historically correct. We leaned toward making something that just felt like it was him.”

She says the primary controversy over Pentious’ human design was his long hair: “We were like, ‘No one typically had long hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But simultaneously, we believe the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just felt he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We kind of provided the rationale that he lived in seclusion, so he just let his hair grow out. So there is always a solution. As we design the human versions of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to explore and figure out. I am looking forward for fans to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”

Fresh installments of Hazbin Hotel season 2 are released on midweek on Prime Video.
