Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
