Time is optimal to alter Manchester United's formation - Ruben Amorim declares.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was among multiple senior players to miss the holiday period victory against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that changing Man Utd's tactical system due to public noise would have signaled "his demise" for him.

Initially against Newcastle United, Amorim ditched his customary back three setup with wide defenders and chose to deploy an traditional four-man defense shielded by two defensive midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this ultimately became a six-man defensive block in the closing stages as his side dug in for a victory - securing just their second-ever shutout of the campaign.

Despite he once notably stated that even the highest authority could force him to change his approach, Amorim asserts the option to play with alternative formations has remained part of his long-term vision.

However, he emphasizes he could solely alter the tactics when his team were faring sufficiently well - or else it would look as if he was succumbing to external criticism.

"When I arrived here last season, I realized maybe I lacked the players to excel in a back three, but it was the beginning of a journey," he stated.

"The goal was to build an philosophy. Today is a different juncture. We don't have a full complement of personnel, and we need be flexible, so they see the reason we are making changes.

"This isn't because of the influence of you guys, or the fans.

"Whenever you criticize altering the system constantly, I cannot make a change because the squad will think I'm altering things because of you and I believe that is a disaster for the coach.

"When we are playing well in our system, that becomes the right time to adapt.

"We will become a better squad because when all the players are back, we are not intending to play with a back three in every match."

Availability Challenges Persist

With just two victories in their last eight outings prior to defeating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to state his team have been in good form.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a severely stretched squad, with multiple senior players already ruled out for the forthcoming home game against winless Wolves.

That total will rise if playmaker Mason Mount fails to shake off the knock that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly urging his manager to allow him to make a comeback after his muscle injury.

"Bruno is already insisting he has to train," revealed Amorim. "But there is no chance he is going to feature against Wolves. No chance. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Influence Endures

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will probably still be a prominent presence, as whereas most injured players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his leader to continue providing input.

"He is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and offering advice. He's constantly speaking. That's why he's the skipper.

"There are flaws sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of positive qualities. Even after he finishes treatment, he heads to watch the rest of the squad training. There are a many things you don't see.

"I don't know if he wants my position or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a true captain."

Return Timeline for Injured Players

While the exact date for the captain's comeback - and that of fellow unavailable stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unclear, before the conclusion of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental duty.
